GLASS INFORMATION

What is Safety Glass?

Safety Glass when broken, in comparison to float glass, provides a level of safety for people in the vicinity. There are two types of safety glass Laminated Safety Glass and Toughened Safety Glass.

Laminated Safety Glass is two pieces of float glass laminated together. The most common form of Laminated Glass is the 6.38mm, which is two pieces of 3mm glass laminated together with a PVB Interlayer. Laminated Safety Glass, when struck with sufficient force, will crack but the pane will stay intact due to the interlayer, leaving no sharp edges exposed. Laminated Safety Glass once broken will stay in place offering a level of security and a barrier to the elements.

Translucent Laminated Glass.

Translucent Laminated Glass is exactly the same as laminated glass only the laminated centre is translucent.

Toughened Glass or 'Tempered Glass', has been baked at high temperatures and then cooled quickly, resulting in the glass being 4 to 5 times stronger than float glass of the same thickness. The process of toughening glass creates compression on the surface and tension in the centre. Toughened Glass conforms to the Australian Standard 2208 Safety Glazing Material for use in Buildings and is commonly found in shower screens, balustrading, oven doors and glass table tops. When Toughened Glass is struck with sufficient force as to cause a breakage, the glass shatters into tiny, relatively harmless, pieces.

What Colours do Splashbacks come in?

Splashbacks can be ordered in any Dulux Colour. For an exact colour match we recommend using Starphire Glass which gives the truest reproduction of colour. Splashbacks are most commonly seen in Bathrooms, Kitchens, Elevators and Bars.

What is Starphire Glass?

Starphire Glass is glass which has had the iron content removed thereby eliminating the green tint which is found in most glass. Starphire Glass is the preferred glass for Splashbacks as it produces true colour when painted.

What is a Polished Edge?

A polished edge creates a small chamfer on the top and bottom of the glass giving a smooth and safe edge

What is a Bevelled Edge?

Bevelled edges range from 10 to 30mm. A bevelled edge is the tapering of the glass to its edge. The width of the bevel on 4mm thick glass is 20mm maximum, 6mm glass is 30mm.

How long does it take for window putty to dry?

It can take up to 12 months for window putty to fully dry. Generally it will develop a skin of about 1mm after a month which will make it more durable. After a year the putty is set and solid.

Cleaning Glass

This information is offered as a general guide only. Please follow the link for more detailed information on cleaning glass.

To clean Glass use only materials which are free of grit and debris, this will avoid scratching and marking the glass surface.

Detergents and cleaning solutions which are recommended for cleaning glass should only be used. Mild detergents are preferable.

Extra care is necessary where high performance reflective glass is installed. The coated surface can be susceptible to stains and scratches.

Toughened Glass requires special care when cleaning. During the toughening process particles can be deposited in the glass surface and if these minute particles are dislodged with cleaning, they may scratch the glass surface. A soft cloth will not dislodge the particles, blades and scrapers should be avoided.

Mirrors require special care in cleaning. To clean a mirror, wipe over the surface with a few drops of methylated spirits on a damp cloth. Polish the surface dry with a lint free cloth. When cleaning do not make contact with the back of the mirror as the silver backing is susceptible to corrosion if in contact with excessive amounts of liquid, including water. As a precaution, clean the surface only and do not touch the sides or back of the mirror with cleaning fluid.

If glass is damaged or broken ensure that an experienced glazier is engaged to rectify the situation. Glass can be a safety hazard if not handled properly.
